Westchester heroes remembered Memorial services were held Saturday afternoon for two Westchester County firefighters who perished in the World Trade Center tragedy. News 12 Westchester's Deb Gallo was there and has this story. The Firefighters Emerald society of Westchester lead the procession in Pleasantville past hundreds of firefighters from around New York and New Jersey. They came to pay tribute to 44 year old Charles Garbarini, a lieutenant in Battalion 9 of the New York City Fire Department, and one of many killed in the World Trade Center attack. Mike Leedy of FDNY Ladder 61 said, I knew Charlie for 15 years, when he came into the department. There was no doubt he would become a lieutenant. More than 300 firefighters are still missing in New York City. For many families, holding memorial services helps to start the process of closure. In Hawthorne, the scene was similar. A tremendous American flag hung from fire engine truck ladders. The same group of bagpipers played tribute to 32 year old Michael Lyons, a Hawthorne firefighter who worked at squad 41 in Harlem. Captain Russell Vomero, of FDNY Squad 41 said, I also will remember Mike as a friend. He was a great firefighter. One of two Westchester county heroes
who will never be forgotten, In Hawthorne, Deb Gallo, News 12 Westchester. | |
