On this bitterly cold morning during a snow storm and high winds, a major fire occurred, destroyed a block of buildings, including stores and the rambling five-story American Hotel. As the gale force winds threatened to spread the fire into other blocks, a decision was made to blow up several buildings to create a firebreak. The firemen were successful in their in their efforts and halted the further spread of the fire. As they now focused their attention on extinguishing the main body of fire, a rear wall collapsed, killing three firemen instantly. Their bodies were recovered and carried to the firehouse, only 150 feet away.

If you have never done it read two classic Firefighting books on Collapse. FDNY Deputy Chief Vincent Dunn's "Collapse of Burning Buildings" and Professor Frank Brannigan's "Fire Officers Guide to Building Construction" Two of the great classics. As we remember the three Buffalo Firemen from 1865, we must always remember that what killed these brave firemen died just the way firefighters are dying all too often today, in Collapses. We must learn to do a better job understanding the very real Collapse dangers that exist and all too often, go unrecognized and unreported at more fires than we realize. "GET TRAINED" Brothers and Sisters. Captain Bob Rainey FDNY Engine 26 retired.
