A Moment in Time 8-10-1968

I picked the date of August 10, 1968, for no particular reason (except maybe that it was Ladder 56's first day of service) to show all apparatus in service on that day in The Bronx.  It's quite a collection of apparatus, before the days of 10 year term-limits.  Ladder 55 had come into being on July 23.
Does anybody know when the last of the hose wagons were taken out of service? E52 apparently had one as late as Sep. 1970 and E70 in late 1973.

Thanks for doing this! Moved from Decatur Ave in 1962.  Used to stop at 79/37 on my way home from SPNS on the Concourse.  In 1962 they had a 1951 WLF and the 1955 FWD TDA.  I often wondered what was replaced, when it was replaced and by what.  Anyone know if the 62 Seagrave 37's got was new or used?

Nice corrections, G-Man.  Check this for me because I believe I am wrong with L27:  they already had a new 1968 ALF delivered on 3/10/68 (I missed that) and therefore did not receive a '69.

2837 Decatur.  Right next door to 3511 in 2839.
They also had a CD rig on Briggs Ave. I don't remember the number.  We used to stop by and the housewatch FF would let us climb all over the rigs. 79 had straight pipes on their Ward ( I think.)  They used to come tearing down 200th ST, ( baroom pop pop pop) Good times!

Interesting stuff but I have a question based on Dennis Smith's book "Report from Engine Co 82"  which i am reading right now  In his book, Smith references Engine Co 85 and Ladder 712 which are apparently quarterd with E82 nd L31 in the same Intervale Ave firehouse used today by 82/31. My questions to the War Years vets on the forum are (1)  how did this firehouse accommodate four front line apparatus pieces, and (2) what was the purpose and period of existence for L712?  I find these types of temporary units as solutions to issues of the day very interesting.

Yes 82/31's also housed Engine 85, a Battalion and Ladder 712. Report from Engine Co. 82 by the way, is perhaps the greatest book on firefighting ever written. If you want, you should really check out the documentary on the firehouse, "The Bronx is Burning", if you haven't already. It's currently available on YouTube.

Ladder 712 was a Tactical Control Unit, or TCU. I believe it was the only TCU Ladder Co. in the Bronx at the time. It was disbanded later on to form Ladder 59. TCU's were basically extra companies manned part time and placed into service in busy firehouses during peak fire activity hours.

This may help:

"'1970 - A New Era in the FDNY...Tactical Control Force' in WNYF (written by Chief of Dept O'Hagan).  Some points from this summary:

Units: TCUs work 37 1/2 hrs; report for duty at 1430 hrs at a firehouse "in an outlying area"; 30 minutes to drive w/assigned apparatus to quarters they will operate from; in service as a conventional engine or truck until 0030 hrs; 30 minutes to drive back to firehouse where their apparatus is stored; work 3 shifts and then 85 hrs off; 5% night differential for all hrs; all members volunteers and interviewed and selected for  their "firefighting experience, attitude, appearance, background and knowledge"; an officer and 7 firefighters in TCU trucks; an officer and 6 firefighters in engines; all engine and ladder companies in adaptive response areas have rosters of 31 firefighters and staffed with "a minimum of 6 firefighters at all times";  increased staffing to match 2 engine and 1 truck adaptive response; all non-firefighting details would be covered from an "administrative quota" of firefighters to maintain minimum unit manning."

Also, I believe the TCU was parked outside of their quarters in many cases, or it swapped out with another company that was normally inside.

Tactical Control Unit 712 was quartered with E43 on Sedgwick Av and saw service between the hours of 1500-2400 from 11-15-1969 to 7-8-1971 at Intervale Av.  It then relocated to 1264 Boston Road with E85 until 11-24-1972 at which time it became L59 in the same house.  It moved in with E43 on 4-17-1978 when that area was burning.  My guess is that it didn't spend much time in quarters, but I don't know if there was room for all 4 rigs.
E85 started on Intervale Av on 7-1-1967 (had been a Manhattan Marine Co. from 1908-1959).  The idea was to reduce the workload on E82, but they often ran together and, as a result, E85 ranked 3rd OF ALL COMPANIES IN THE CITY, INCLUDING SQUADS in 1968 with 8,386 runs.  E82 was 1st with 9,111 runs and L31 was 2nd at 8,597 runs.
Interesting to note that they must have made some changes to the response protocols in 1969 (interchanges, not running together) because E82 dropped to 17th (6,183 runs) and E85 to 37th (4,958).

Engine 85 was previously Squad 9 @ Engine 22 from 1961 to 1967. Most of the members of the Squad went to The Bronx.
