1637hrs- 2nd Alarm

1703hrs- 3rd Alarm

1715hrs- Evac tones, removing all members from original unit.

1742hrs- 4th Alarm

1800hrs- Exterior op's setting up.

1615hrs- Bergen Mutual Aid plan sending units from Mid-Bergen

1845hrs- Setting up multiple ladder pipes on all sides. Edgewater and North Hudson on River Road.

1900hrs- Heavy embers blowing west. Heavy fire throughout more than half the complex.

1915hrs- Bergen activating M/A from Pascack Valley and South Bergen regions.

2000hrs- Req. for FDNY and Jersey City Marine Co's to the scene for water.

2100hrs- FDNY Marine B/C req. Marine 6 to scene. M/A Neptune System to scene, units being activated ATT.
 
At 21:20, Brooklyn Dispatch advised all units that Marine 9 has relocated to the company of Marine Company 6
 
I think it is time for the FDNY to revisit it's protocol in mutual aid responses thruout our region. When i look back at the 911 Response the FDNY had units assiting within our borders units from Westchester , Rockland , Counties in New Jersey and Long Island. Why not stage in an incident such as this one and give the Incident commander the option of rolling them in? If not needed then everyone goes 10-8. I lived in Edgewater from 1995 to 2000 and this was in the making AND STILL IS. This light weight contruction is present all along the waterfront. Station 42 My hat goes off to you guys and my prayers that all displaced will be able to put their lives together again.

Mutual aid to include NYC is just  not as easy as it sounds.  Edgewater may need to dig deep and hire more and open more houses.....its only getting more populated
 
and that's why we cut huge holes in roof early into operation....and that doesn't always work
 
This fire is the product of years of cut-backs on fire departments and the consolidation of all 5 cities into NHRFR.  Just can't do the job with the lack of manpower politicians have provided or not provided their tax payers and the people they serve.  Very dangerous for our brothers! 
 
Hi DMA , Regional cuts were coming with the consolidation. If this is the Gold coast then the county needs to up the ante. That area needs upgraded equipment in the worst way. Vollie Depts do their damdest with what they are given literally. Station 42 Rolls out with 3 pumpers on a good day and two trucks one reavy rescue. That assignment was enough to cover the river road side of those buildings. What about the other 300,00 square feet? Those Departments need Funding not Grants. The city should build a Fire Protection Tax to help fund more equipment to this Very populated congested area.

It looks like zoning and building codes had as much or more to do with the problem than the lack of fire department resources.  It certainly doesn't appear that these buildings had anywhere near sufficient firewalls nor breaks between buildings to slow down the spread of the fire.  It also appears that they are built entirely from lightweight construction which creates his own set of problems, it's only because of cheap to build! Even if this was in the FDNY first response all of their resources would have had a difficult time confining and containing this because of the structure.
 
Edgewater is all Volunteer while NHRFR is a completly diffrent department in a diffrent county.
 
Agreed changes need to be made. So what do we do about the miles of new construction in Edgewater? Or what is already built.. I can go on and on about these types of developments all over Bergen especially Edgewater. The old Lever Brothers complex is about to start this also. I am sure they will get the go ahead. Shameful..
 
I have followed jobs in this type of construction throughout the U.S. Any substantial fire in this type of constructed building has had basically the same outcome as here. Even LA City, just last month had a similiar huge fire in a block long bldg under construction. Even Fires that had originated outside, or in mulch, extend rapidly overtaking the building and the fire protection systems.  Other cities that come to mind in past couple years that had jobs like this: Indianapolis, Houston, Peabody, etc. 
The problem IS the type of construction! But, it's cheap, easy to put up, and usually ok......as long as it don't catch on fire! The building trade will always get what they want over the stricter fire codes being asked.
 
The lightweight construction of these buildings is well known. The construction measures used by these mass manufactures skimp on smoke partitions in the attic space fire wall separations, full sprinkler systems, untrained or improper installers and repairmen.
History in the past taught us how to build these types of residential buildings, today money speaks, lets cut the corners and cheapen up the construction.
Avalon properties alone is a major contributor to these fires, have to wonder what the insurance companies say.
