"Heavy fire rolls across the roof of a catholic school under renovation. This 3 alarm blaze was confined to the school. It was a miracle that none of the exposures were damaged even though there was a massive brand problem."

I believe it is St. Vincent de Paul School.

They sure were some busy years (1983....).

I believe this the former St Francis Prep High which has been in  QNS since '74  .....in '83 it was being renovated to be another school... SFP at it's present location in Fresh Meadows QNS is the largest catholic HS in the U.S. ......... i was at this fire w/R*2.......workers were using a torch to remove paint on the 1st floor & thought they had put the fire out but it was roaring behind the difficult to open wire lath walls & extended rapidly........also use the "OLDER" arrow for some '71 B'Ville fire shots.

St. Francis Prep in Queens was formerly Bishop Reilly H.S. which originally was a girls H.S. on Sanford Ave. between Kissena Blvd and Union Street if I'm not mistaken.

Bishop Reilly HS,  if my memory serves me correctly was a co-institutional HS.  Girls on one side of the building and guys on the other.  EFD274 can clarify since he was a student there, might have been the first graduating class.  When the property was transferred to St. Francis Prep, they clased the Brooklyn campus and made the new Prep a co ed institution.

Glad to hear that St. Francis Prep is still in business....great school,
I went to Brooklyn Prep (Nostrand & Carroll) and graduated in 1969. Class of 1971 was the last as Prep closed and became Medger Evers College.
I understand that the former girl's school building of St. Teresa of Avila Parish (Classon & Sterling Place) (also known at one time as "All Saints") has become Brooklyn Prep Acadamy.
Does anyone know whatever became of St. John's Prep?

Take care to all,

Jim Boyle (aka 1261truckie)

Mater Christi on Crescent St. in Astoria became St. John's Prep. Now whether that has the same affiliation as the former one in Bklyn. is unknown to me.

Does not have any affiliation with the Vincentian Fathers or St. Johns University.  However, the current administration is trying to make the connection with the old Prep on Lewis Avenue Brooklyn.  A firend of mine finished a history for them last year.
