FDNY Line of Duty Death

February 6, 1928 - LODD
Fireman John Dwyer
Ladder 78
FDNY. Staten Island, New York

While operating at a two-alarm fire involving a coal pocket, Fireman Dwyer fell 80 feet to the ground from a coal hoist and was killed.

Fireman John Dwyer fell eighty feet from the Department of Plant and Structures coal pockets at the end of the ferry terminal. Fireman Dwyer died before arriving at the Staten Island Hospital. His injuries were a fractured skull and internal injuries. The firemen had a tough time fighting this two-alarm fire with the extreme cold and the inaccessible position of the coal pocket. Fireman Dwyer had stayed after his shift to joke with the on-duty platoon. The alarm came in at 8:46 in the morning and Dwyer responded with his company. He and another fireman were ordered to the roof of the coal pocket with a hose line. Between the wind, ice and whipping of the hose line, Fireman Dwyer lost his footing and fell off the roof. His brother assigned to Engine 77, the fireboat Zophar Mills, watched in horror as he saw his brother fall from the roof. Dwyer, who spent nine years with Ladder 78, was married and the father of five small children. (From "The Last Alarm" by Boucher, Urbanowicz & Melahn, 2007)

RIP. Never forget.
