Patrolmen Waverly Jones and Joseph Piagentini were shot and killed while on foot patrol in the Colonial Park Houses public housing complex, at 159th Street and Harlem River Drive. They were ambushed by members of the Black Liberation Army.

As the two patrolmen were returning to their cruiser at approximately 10:00 pm, three suspects snuck up behind them and opened fire. Patrolman Jones was struck in the back of the head and killed instantly. Patrolman Piagentini was shot 13 times and succumbed to his injuries en route to the hospital.

One of the suspects stole Patrolman Jones' weapon which was later recovered in San Francisco, California after several BLA members opened fire on a San Francisco, police officer.

Two of the suspects, along with five others, were also involved in the murder of Sergeant John Victor Young of the San Francisco Police Department on August 29th, 1971.

The three suspects were arrested and sentenced to 25 years to life. One of the suspects died in prison. One remains in prison, and the third was granted parole in March 2018.

Patrolman Jones had served New York City Police Department for five years and was assigned to the 32nd Precinct. He was survived by his wife and three children.

The Black Liberation Army was a violent, radical group that attempted to fight for independence from the United States government in the late 1960's and early 1970's. The BLA was responsible for the murders of more than 10 police officers around the country. They were also responsible for violent attacks around the country that left many police officers wounded.

RIP.

https://www.sfgate.com/news/article/THE-DEATH-OF-SGT-JOHN-YOUNG-Evidence-revealed-2654068.php

John Victor Young
Sergeant John Young was shot and killed inside the Ingleside District Police Station.

While the police station was emptied of officers who had responded to an earlier bombing at another location, two men entered the police station and stuck a 12-gauge shotgun through an opening in the bullet proof glass that separated the waiting area from the rest of the police station. The suspects fired between five and ten shotgun blasts, killing Sergeant Young and wounding a civilian employee of the department. Both gunmen then fled the station house and into a waiting getaway car. Both suspects were later determined to be members of the Black Liberation Army.

Seven suspects were eventually apprehended and charged with Sergeant Young's murder. The charges were dropped in 1975 when evidence surfaced that confessions obtained might have been the result of torture. Two of the suspects were charged with the murders of Patrolman Waverly Jones and Patrolman Joseph A. Piagentiai of the New York City Police Department on May 21, 1971. Both were convicted of first degree murder and sentenced to life in prison.

In 1999 Sergeant Young's case was reopened when new forensic evidence surfaced. On January 23, 2007, the original seven suspects were again arrested and charged with murder. On July 5, 2009, charges against four of the suspects were dropped. The two suspects who murdered the two New York police officers were convicted of manslaughter and conspiracy to commit voluntary manslaughter. They were sentenced to the time they served while awaiting trial and were returned to New York. Charges against the last suspect were dropped on August 18, 2011.

Sergeant Young was survived by his wife.

RECD THIS IN AN E MAIL.......
Hi Bob,
Regarding your below email, according to today's NY Post (3/16/18), the
parole board which has 14 members and five vacant seats, voted 2-1 in
favor of parole. The 2 parole board members voting in favor of parole
were Carol Shapiro and Otis Cruse, both appointed by Gov. Cuomo.
I also spoke with Diane Piagentini yesterday who's a neighbor of mine,
and told her I contacted my State Senator, Phil Boyle, to see if the entire
14 member parole board and/or Gov. Cuomo can reverse the 3 member
2-1 decision.
Perhaps if active and retired NYPD/FDNY police officers and firefighters
were to contact their State Senators too, this "horrendous" decision of the
parole board can be reversed.

EVERY Police Officer (active and retired) and every Police agency in NY
State should be writing or phoning The Governor in an effort to overturn
this horrendous decision by the Parole Board.
Is there a publicly available record of their deliberations (assuming
there were any!)

God Bless all Police Officers

Hi Ken,
Thanks for sending the below email to Senate Majority Leader John Flanagan.
As I also emailed Sen. Boyle, hopefully, the State Senate passes a resolution
recommending the firing the parole board members who voted to parole
"admitted cop-killer Herman Bell" as Diane Piagentini recommended, if they,
and/or Gov. Cuomo, don't reverse this "horrendous decision."

Dear Senator John Flanagan,
It is my hope that you can assert your Influence to correct this horrendous
decision.

Respectfully,

Subject: PC?s Message Regarding Parole of Herman Bell

To the Men and Women of the New York City Police Department:

The New York State Parole Board?s decision earlier today to
release admitted cop-killer Herman Bell from prison is indefensible.
It trivializes and condones the premeditated assassinations
of NYPD Officers Joseph Piagentini and Waverly Jones.
It also reopens the wounds suffered not just by these heroic
officers? relatives, but by the entire law enforcement community
and all of civil society. Every day, police officers bravely face the
risk of serious injury and death in confronting armed robbers,
fleeing felons, and the unpredictability of domestic violence.
But the murders of Officers Piagentini and Jones were different.
Bell and his co-conspirators placed a false 911 call to lure the
officers into an ambush in 1971.
The officers were drawn into a trap for the purpose of killing
them and fomenting social unrest. It was a horrific assault on
the basic underpinnings of our society.
After killing Officer Jones with a gunshot to his head, they shot
Officer Piagentini 22 times, including with his own service
revolver ? as the dying officer pleaded for his own life. Bell
was sentenced to 25-years-to-life. Over the past 47 years, he
has never expressed genuine remorse.
And the parole board?s unjust and irresponsible decision
today renders the life portion of that sentence meaningless.
My position is simple: We don?t have the death penalty in
New York, but there has to be something more permanent than
eventually getting released if you murder a police officer.
Herman Bell?s victims ? targeted solely for the blue uniform
they wore ? can never be paroled from death.

James P. O?Neill
Police Commissioner

Truly staggered and unable to grasp why this POS is being released to freedom. Did I read correctly that one of the board members who voted for his parole is actually a relative of the fallen officer?!!?

Surely this ludicrous decision must be reversed.  :-\
