So I guess what I want to know is this: what are the tactical fire alarm dispatchers doing when Field Comm is not on a run? Are they taking calls at the dispatch center?

Dispatcher from Toronto Fire here. Just curious, how are the field comm units staffed? Are they actual fire alarm dispatchers who would normally be answering the phones? I'd love to know more about how this unit operates from when they are sent to major incidents, who staffs them, etc. Thanks...

It depends. I'm a dispatcher for Toronto Fire for about 25 years. Normally when you have an extra alarm, you want the closest apparatus to respond. So you relocate trucks into the empty halls so that the closest are always responding. The problem with this is that while the closest apparatus are...
