Chief Erlacher was a member of Engine 13 before he was promoted to Assistant Engineer (Battalion Chief). He was responding to Manhattan Box 38 on a tender when he was thrown off and fatally injured.

1905 postcard illustrates late 1800s-early 1900s hose tender responding to a NYC alarm. Chief Erlacher was responding on a tender.

Early day FDNY chiefs ran to fires, rode buggies to fires and rode horse-drawn apparatus to fires.
