Fireman Thomas L. Jacobus of Ladder 5 was detailed to Headquarters as a messenger [on November 9, 1880]. Early in the evening he attempted to mount a repair shop wagon. The horses were startled by Jacobus’s movement and started to move. Jacobus was thrown to the pavement and suffered a fractured right thigh and internal injuries. He was taken to Bellevue Hospital by ambulance where he died [on November 12]. (From "The Last Alarm" by Boucher, Urbanowicz & Melahn, 2007)
Fireman Jacobus died as a result of injuries sustained November 9th, when he fell from the repair shop wagon while at a test trail of the new engine.
