At approximately 3:16pm, Portsmouth Emergency Communications received numerous 911 calls for a Residential Fire at the corner of South St and Effingham St in downtown Portsmouth.
Initial companies arrived to find a two story duplex, well involved with fire. A second alarm was called and a defensive strategy was put in place to keep the fire from spreading to closely adjacent buildings.
The fire was brought under control in just over an hour at 4:18Pm. 6 people and two dogs have been displaced and are being assisted by the Red Cross.
This fire is still under Investigation as an active scene; but preliminary reports are indicating the fire to be accidental and not suspicious.
Thank you to the dozens of firefighters and paramedics who worked from multiple agencies, to bring this fire under control. Portsmouth, navy region, and Chesapeake firefighters were on scene. (Portsmouth FD)
