It may have been mentioned elsewhere that the Dept. policy for wooden extension ladders was "fly out" = only to facilate bringing down victims that were unable to come down without assistance. Easier sliding them down on the beams without hitting the tips of the bed ladder. That procedure probably just stayed with us with the introduction of Alcolite and DuoSafety ladders.
