I reluctantly travel the Belt Pkwy but sometimes I have to when I travel out of state, I no longer take the Williamsburg Bridge and Holland Tunnel, and my son lives in Mill Basin. Last week I was on it at about 11 AM and they were repairing the guard rail at Pennsylvania Ave. with 2 lanes...
I don't remember Wolfman Jack here in NY. I thought he was a California Guy. My wife used to call in the Birthdays of me and the kids to Harry Harrison in the AM. So as I pull up to the Firehouse, Harry announces my Birthday. Later that morning the Babe says he heard on the radio today was my BD.
Those Brownstones on MacDonough St. had the nicest wood work and most of them were well kept. Just watch out for the low window sills. Firefighting tactics in those type buildings was a little different than the norm.
That few minutes for truck response has probably increased due to, speed bumps, 25 mph car traffic and more stop signs and traffic lights added to that area due to a population increase.
The Chief's car is a 57 Plymouth, 58's had dual headlights. Also 57 taillight was entire length of fin where as 58 just had round tailllight in the fin.
The War year ranks are thinning at an alarming rate. No one left to talk about the 30-40 run night tours, eating on the run and maybe a relocation thrown in for good measure and of course a good vacant building fire to keep firefighting skills up to par. In Brooklyn, early in the AM being on the...
I would see Chief Sal at the various breakfasts and would usually BS for a period of time reminiscing about the good old times . He never mentioned his son being a victim of 911. Another case in point as a retiree and going to as many funerals possible, I would hear a name and never associate...
We had a matron in 233 on Hull St. and she lived in Glendale. She would take public transportation to get to the firehouse. One day she was mugged and no longer came to Quarters. Luckily I was in the military, so I knew how to make a bed with Hospital corners.
All the submarine race watching that went on for us listening to WMCA, WABC, WINS and WMGM. It was the greatest time growing up as a teenager. I'm glad I never had bucket seats in my cars back then.
I've always said the Fire Dept. is like an insurance policy that you have to have but don't like to take advantage of. So they cut back and are paying the price to some degree now. It seems like when cutbacks hit usually the FD goes first, and in FDNY it's the Fire Marshals that go first, then...
Well looks like 169 knows how to get to 175's Quarter's now. The Tiller is needed North of Atlantic in Cypress Hills and Highland park area, but there not the busy boxes like East N.Y.. 2X in 2 days, but at least not 3AM this time.
169 was our busy night interchange co., more than 20 runs and a couple of jobs, we would go there next night. 168 was our every third night interchange. We would usually leave the Tin House around 6:30 and get there around 7:15 -7:30. Traffic was pretty heavy at that hour. Today with the 25 mph...
My Dad was off duty and went to the area where the crash was and assisted in any way he could. Being a young buck at that time was told to wait in the car. I went to Bklyn. Tech so I knew the area where it happened.
