if a comapny was responding to a box, and got the signal 10-20, this means proceed at reduced/normal speed(??)

Would thi smean the company switching off its lights an siren and going with the flow of traffic, or proceeding at normal speed but with just lights on, and using the siren and horn only wen proceeding against a red light at an intersection or in gridlocked traffic?/

any advice appreciated.

From what I've seen they continue responding with lights on, and siren/horn only as needed.  Regular speed , full stops at intersections, etc.

According to communications manual 10-20 signal is as follows
No lights/warning devices reduce speed continue responding with caution. Meaning 1st due on scene nothing showing so slow down. This is supposed to slow units down and avoid accidents, some companies may disregard signal or not adhere to it but hopefully they dont have major accident with 10-20 transmitted. The Officer is supposed to inform chauffeur of signal when received via MDT or dept. radio.

FYI, in Va. Beach we respond in emergency mode or non-emergency mode. It's all or nothing.

With our State law; responding with lights(no siren) or any partial combination will cause you to be liable if you wreck.

Tennessee the same way. Here its called the Vanessa K Free Law. In 2007 Vanessa Free was killed when a Police car was responding to a fight, with ONLY lights on. The 17 y/o didn't see the pd car and was hit in the driver's side door and killed. Her family fought legislation and got this law passed. Must have siren on at all times when lights are on.

Basically, the 10-20 requires that the units that are still enroute proceed to the scene in a non emergency mode. If after transmitting a 10-20 the officer becomes aware that there is an actual emergency or fire that requires the balance of the assignment to operate, he then would notify the dispatcher to disregard the 10-20 and have all units respond in.
