Box numbers in Manhattan generally run south to north, east-west-east.  Box 618 is at 23rd and 10th and Box 622 is at 24th and 9th, both south of 27th and 6th so 599 should be south of both of those.  Does anyone know why this box location is out of sequence?

This is another Buff trivia question. The Box on 6th Ave. & 27th St if it were to go in sequence would have been 652, and we all know that 652 is a signal the FDNY uses, so it became Box 599.I was told this by Matty Lomansky(RIP) at a bell Club meeting many yrs ago.
