12:55 am air recon is 10-84. 1:00am air recon is 10-8.  how does this work? they have to get pd to get a chopper in the air with a fd chief, they do a flyover and then go bye bye.  i mean in a brush fire type fire or like a huge warehouse type facility or even a highrise it makes sense.  seems like a waste of time, money and manpower for a 6 story md fire.
 
Use it or loose it......it is better to have them up or at least on the way rather than not at all.....at any type job they could be useful to the IC as another view of the scene maybe seeing something not in view too ground units as well as traffic conditions in the area for responding Units or for routes FROM the scene to a Hosp or even if need be a Med Evac.
 
The air recon is sent on the 3rd alarm, and usually the chief will ask the borough dispatcher before they take off from Floyd Bennent Field if they are still needed, but i guess they didn't do it this time. Maybe the chief just wanted to take a nice flight to see Manhattan.
