Where was Rescue 2?

Rescue 5 cover some parts of Brooklyn

Rescue-5 is assigned in Coney, being closer in SI than R-2 coming from Bergen st. in Bklyn.
This was not the case when there was a Div. 12 about 20 years ago.  Leaving SI w/o a rescue unit makes no sense.  Traffic volume on the bridge determines who is sent I think.

Rescue 5 is 8.1 miles away and 15 minutes per Mapquest to this Coney Island address.
Rescue 2 is 11.1 miles away and 26 minutes per Mapquest.
R5 can also respond rapidly into Bay Ridge and Coney Island using the SI Expressway, bridge and Belt Pkwy.

The point about SI coverage is good.  SI always had minimal Rescue/special unit coverage.  Ladder 78 doubled as Rescue 5 in the 1950s and early 60s.  They had a home-made converted hose wagon.  That was in the days when you had to use the ferries to get to SI from Blyyn or Manhattan.  I guess they disbanded R5 when the bridge was built.  (It was not disbanded by Bloomberg back then, but he probably would take credit.)  It still took Rescue 2 probably a half hour or more with the bridge to respond to many parts of SI before Rescue 5 was reorganized at E 160 in the 1980s.

Rescue 2 used to be assigned on the 3rd alarm to Coney Island boxes in the late 60s and 1970s.  There was no rescue or squad on all hands or 2nds.

I understand and respect the need for copyright protection and to prevent unauthorized reproduction, but the "First on Scene" banner across the center of each photo is way too intense.  It makes it difficult to view the content.  Just a suggestion for the future... reduce the contrast of the banner or move it to an edge of the image.  Nice shots, tho,  all in all.

There's a few boxes way down that way that are R-2's. But like was stated before, it's generally accepted that just about anything in the 8th Division in Brooklyn is R-5's.

You need to go to Lou Minutoli's site and send him this note.

This was not the case when there was a Div. 12 about 20 years ago.  Leaving SI w/o a rescue unit makes no sense.  Traffic volume on the bridge determines who is sent I think.

I remember reading ( and i think it was in a forum chat in here somewhere ) from a Ret. FDNY member that back when R5 started responding to boxes in Brooklyn that the guys in R2 were not happy with work being taking away from them in Brooklyn.

Also on leaving S.I without a rescue unit - would it make sence in S.I to have a Squad?? I know S.I isnt busy enough for a Squad and Budget is empty but its cover in case anything kicks off when R5 is in Brooklyn

Coney Island; hot dogs, rides, cotton candy, the ocean, and fun for the whole family. Over the years all that seems to be disappearing. Very sad to see this landmark burning. Just a Great place to be. I'd watch Engine 245, and Ladder 161 ride by with the decal of clowns and Coney Island on the side of the rig. The picture described their response area, which I would guess was once one of the best amusement parks around. "Good Bye Coney Island".

"Mack", Thanks for posting those pictures and that video of Coney Island. The 1940s video was a little before My Time, but I do think that I saw my good friend "Johnnyd248" riding those little fire trucks, back in the 1940s.
Reality is that Coney Island just isn't the same today. Many Amusment Parks throughout the country have taken the same path as Coney Island. As a young kid, I relate very much to an Amusement Park in Bridgeport, Ct. It was called "Pleasure Beach". Things started going down the tubes there in the late 60s. Eventually, Everything from the roller coaster, to the ticket booth was burned out. Today, what used to be a Great Fun Place, is just one massive weed covered waste land. As time went on, instead of enjoying the rides, I buffed the fires out there. I said my "Good Bye to Bridgeport's Pleasure Beach" many years ago.
