Fiery crash kills six in Virginia

The Suffolk Dept of Fire Rescue responded to a reported auto accident on July 24, 2007.  Engine 4, under the command of Lt. Nelms, responded and immediately saw a large column of black smoke from the station.  Units arrived to find a two vehicle collision with both vehicles on fire spreading into the surrounding woods.

The crew of Engine 4 was met with frantic bystanders advising the people were still inside the Honda Accord which was unrecognizable due to the fire.  The Honda had been traveling Eastbound on Rt. 58, a major artery that runs through Suffolk, around 4pm.  Reports from witnesses, state that the car crossed the grassy median and launched airborne striking the large utility truck.

Witnesses were able to free one person from the Honda Accord before it burst into flames.  This victim was transported to Norfolk General by Nightingale, the regions air transport helicopter.  After the fire was extinguished, the burned remains of the remaining five victims were found.  Squad 1 performed the extensive extrication of the victims which were turned over to the funeral home.  The victim pulled from the car later died at the hospital.

Medical and dental records were used to identify the victims.  This is the highest death toll from an automobile accident since 1972.
