Thank you "MichaelS" for your Detroit Devils Night 2011 Report.

I really didn't listen to Detroit much during that time, but counted on your report for the activity during the night. I also passed on your information to others on www.ctfire-ems. They had started a thread on Devils Night in Detroit. So I just referred them to here and your reports.

I remember when a few buff friends from N.J. had gone out to Detroit for one of the first Devils Nights back in the 1980s. There were 200 Working fires then. Firehouse Magazine also did a story on it. Thats when Detroits Devils Night started to be so well known.

I guess after awhile, just like as was the case in some of NYCs neighborhoods during their own set of War Years, there just isn't much left to burn. I'm sure parts of Detroit now resemble more farmland than parts of a major city.

Thank you "MichaelS" for your reporting to us. I know that I appreciated it.

No problem at all.
Much quieter year this time round, what I noticed is there were no small fires throughout the night.
Once again @ 0300hrs all companies went on the air to patrol their first alarm district.

Things certainly change through the years.....in NYC the old Fourth of Julys of the '70s..'80s..& early '90s as well as Election nights in Red Hook BKLYN into the '60s used to be nuts however in recent times these days for the most part go unnoticed as far as heavy fire duty....my take on it.....changing Nationalities & cultures  in the neighborhoods.....some do not honor the previous traditions (good or bad) in NYC....i do not know about Detroit.

I can echo that, Chief. I can only remember one busy 4th of July in my time, and even then it wasn't that busy compared to the stuff you saw. I worked a day tour in Brooklyn in 97, and we had 8 jobs in Brooklyn over the course of the day. After dark, a couple of multiples, and a multiple in SI. I've worked maybe 5 or 6 4th of July's since, and none of them have been remotely close to busy.

From what it looks like, Detroit is getting to be like Brooklyn and the Bronx were back in the day.

Chief, I'm witness to that. Those Fourth of Julys in the 70s, 80s and early 90s were completely out of control. The fireworks and rockets going on throughout the city made it sound like you were in the middle of a war zone. From what I heard, there was Never a shortage of FDNY members that wanted to work those busy Fourth of Julys.

I think the Red Hook Election nights were a little before the time I started doing my buffing thing. But I remember people telling me about how busy it was.

The FDNY has had its busy Election Nights, Fourth of Julys, and War Years for about a 40 year period. I don't think theres any city that can claim a record like that. But from what I've heard and seen, Detroit has become the new Arson Capital of the World.

I can remember several July 4th's in the late 60's that were really hopping.  My Volley company in Clason Point (Harding Park ) would typically run about 40 to 50ish runs, mostly brush, dumpsters, ADV's. and false alarms.  We would always advise FDNY if any building, cars or other things of value were either involved or if there were any exposures were in danger.
