Looking through the Borough of Queens I noticed Engine Companies 264 and 328 are assigned to the same house. Why is this? Do they each have a separate first-due territory? I could not find any other houses in the city that have more than one engine or ladder assigned to them.

Thanks in advance!

Prior to 1960, the "big house on 162 street just north of Jamaica Ave., quartered E275, E298, E299, L127 and the 50 Battalion. In 1960 E275 went to their newly built quarters on Merrick Blvd. and 111 Ave. E299 went to a brand new house on Utopia Parkway just south of the L.I.E. and moved in with L152 who left their previous quarters with E306 and the 53 Battalion in Bayside. Of course the "big house" is no longer in use. E298, L127 and the 50 moved to Hillside Ave. & 150 street to their new quarters.

As far as 328 & 264 I believe, but would not swear to, one company has first due boxes east of quarters and the other has first due boxes west of quarters. I hope that helps just a bit.

Engine 246, Engine 327 and Ladder 169 operated from the same firehouse in Sheepshead Bay for many years.  The engines were assigned to most of the same boxes but had different 1st due designations.

Thanks for the info. But why would the FDNY have both these engine companies in the same house? I see they cover "Far Rockaway". Is it because there are no other houses relatively close?

Yes, no companies close to the Rockaway penninsula from the NE.                                                                      BTW, The firehouse was originally built for Engine 264 to be a double (two section) engine company. E7/L1, E30 (3 sections), E31 (2 sections), E33 (2 sections before L9 moved in) Eng. 76's old house @105 W. 102nd St.; E80/L23 @503 W. 139th St. was originally built for a double E80 directly behind L23's pre-existing firehouse @504 W. 140th St.; E91/L43 and E93/L45 houses were all built with separate bays for double engine companies. Also, Ladder 2's old house at 126 E. 50th St.; L8 before house was cut in half to widen Varick St. for subway line; Ladder 17 (before R.3 then E60 moved in); E34/L21 (has a wide bay for L21's former two sections); Ladder 26's old house at 52 E. 114th St.; Ladder 28 was a double co. before E69 moved in; Ladder 35's old house @142 W. 63rd St., were originally built for double ladder companies.

guitarman,

Very interesting.

Would (or were) the engine companies that were 2 section (or 3 section) have a different company number assigned to the second piece like E264 / E328?

Are they the only house left in the FDNY with a 2 section engine company?

Yes, second sections of Engine 264 (328), E245 (E326) and E 246 (E327). The only one that remains is E328. There have been firehouses with two different engine companies in the same house like E266/E267 and E275, E298, E299 but those were sepatate companies that had their own firehouses that were eventually consolidated into one house.
