Anyone know the background and when this service was disbanded?

KFD, I believe that there are still a few around. If I'm not mistaken there is one at E151 in Staten Island.

They still have this . All units survey hydrants in their administrative districts when the temperature drops below a certain temperature for longer than a day or two. The list goes up through Battalions and Divisions. The thawing apparatus then is sent out to thaw hydrants with two OT firefighters. The unit may also be called to incidents requiring its use. (frozen aerials) There is one in each boro, the Queens unit was operating out of 265  Engine in the Rockaways. It is basically an oil burner that creates steam.

The old one in the picture outside the now qtrs of R*5 was the model used well into the '70s....the vehicle engine was gasoline powered & the thawing unit was diesel.....later units were all diesel.....i think maybe some new ones may be pods that can be put on or taken off a small flatbed i know this was a concept considered but i do not know if they actually bought any.....i have not seen the most current ones at least in the last few years...if the weather remains as it is i am sure they will be activated soon.
