Lieutenant James T. Brown of Ladder 45 died three days after receiving a crushed leg while responding to a fire in the Bronx. The truck hit a trolley pole on the Washington Bridge, which crosses the Harlem River at 181st Street. He died in Fordham Hospital despite efforts of members of the Fire Department to save his life by giving their blood for transfusions. (From "The Last Alarm" by Boucher, Urbanowicz & Melahn, 2007)
