The 17 Division was organized on October 18, 1968, and placed in service in the quarters of Engine 252 at 617 Central Ave - Bushwick - Brooklyn.
The main response district of the 17 Division was Bushwick, Brownsville, and East New York which at the time was being incinerated by the "Locals".
Fire duty was intense.
"Burn Baby Burn".
The 17 Division was made up of the following battalions - 28, 37, 38, 57, 60 (Administratively)
With the opening of the 17th Division, the 15th Division moved to Engine 257 in Canarsie.
The 17th Division was nicknamed: "The Panzer Division".
Despite the fact that the 17 Division was very busy, they were closed on July 4th, 1975.
Their closing was during the "FDNY War Years" and had an immediate negative impact.
