We have approximately 100 Rescue trained Paramedics with 356 hours of rescue training. These members can treat patients in the most adverse environments imaginable: a person injured in a confined space, on a boat, at a construction site, or even under a train. When it comes to the maritime environment, our Rescue Paramedics have some of the best equipment and medications in order to provide the best possible patient care on our waterways all around the city. We have mechanical CPR machines that can provide high quality chest compressions while our marine units are underway. We also have mechanical ventilator, which also helps us greatly in these unstable marine environments. A lot of the time when we are talking about a rescue on our waterways, we can be as far as 30 minutes from land. These devices allow us to provide the highest level of patient care, uninterrupted and without delay. We have responded to incidents on cruise ships, at the beaches, triathlons, helicopter crashes, and boating accidents, just to name a few. These Rescue Medics provide the best possible care to New Yorkers each and every day, holding themselves to a very high standard,” said FDNY Lieutenant and Rescue Paramedic Paul Ardizzone.
The New York City Fire Department has extensively trained a select group of Rescue Medics to perform advanced pre-hospital emergency medical care in the Special Operations environment. They carry specialized medications and medical equipment, while operating under specific protocols used exclusively by Rescue Medics. In addition to being Hazardous Materials Medical Technicians, FDNY Rescue Medics receive training in advanced medical management, including crush syndrome and crush medical management. These members are also trained to treat and medically manage patients in a confined space, collapse, high-rise, trench, high angle rescue operation, and during a maritime emergency.
