From Frank Holt Former BKLYN Dispatcher & Author........
QUOTE ...
My next book, coming out next month, is
911 Dispatchers Are More Than You Might Imagine. This book is
not part of
The Guardians of Brooklyn series of novels, nor the
Tales of The Guardians of Brooklyn ebook short stories or the
Collected Tales of Brooklyn Fire Dispatch paperbacks (one published this past March and one coming next year)..
It is a non-fiction look at the value of 911 Dispatchers to their communities and the responders they dispatch, and a description of the many stressors they face as a result of their work.
From the Amazon description for both the paperback of Kindle ebook editions of
911 Dispatchers Are More Than You Might Imagine:
"The 911 system in the United States is approaching a crisis in staffing. For some locales, the crisis has already arrived. While a lot of time, research and money has been going into trying to keep up with technical evolutions in emergency communications, not nearly as much has been spent on the
peoplewho are the heart of this system. 911 call centers nationwide are experiencing an
average vacancy rate of 25%. The average career span of a 911 Dispatcher is 5-7 years. Why is it so hard to keep people in this job?
It’s not just about the calls.
Yes, some of the calls are disturbing to the point of vicarious trauma, suffered when 911 Dispatchers are exposed to the trauma of callers. But that unfortunate phenomenon is nowhere near the totality of 911 Dispatchers’ sources of stress, the great majority of which are chronic rather than acute.
911 Dispatchers Are More Than You Might Imagine highlights the value of 911 Dispatchers to the communities they serve. It illustrates some of the ways in which they make responders’ jobs safer. It presents numerous chronic stressors to which 911 Dispatchers are subjected both at their jobs and, because of their jobs, in other areas of their lives. Some needed changes and how to start implementing them are suggested.
This book challenges you to think differently about the serious social problem of a 911 Dispatcher shortage. If you care about any First Responder, you should care about the
First First Responders, 911 Dispatchers."
If you have gotten any of my books from Amazon over the past few years, you know that they will be sending you a heads-up on anything I write. I wanted to add my own heads-up to you that this book is not about Brooklyn FDNY Dispatchers in the 1970's. Those guys aren't gone by any means. I just finished a short story and am working on a novelette about them. And the first three chapters of the fifth novel,
Brooklyn Favors, are complete. So they'll be coming back shortly.
All of this is not to say you wouldn't find
911 Dispatchers Are More Than You Might Imagineinteresting. I just didn't want you to order it thinking it was part of a series and be surprised when you got it!
Thanks for reading!
