July 1, 1834 - approx. 0245 hrs - fire discovered in Haydock, Clay and Company store, 273 Pearl Street.  Volunteer firemen Eugene Underhill and FA Ward, Engine 13, were killed when a wall collapsed.  Most of company was present and were fortunate to not have been caught under falling wall.  The company buried the young members side by side, the same manner in which they were killed.

On March 1, 1834, fireman John Knapp of Engine 32 was killed at another store fire at Front and Depeyster Street when a wall collapsed on him while he had the nozzle of Engine 32's line.
