Garner (NC) Fire Department starts new 48/96 shift schedule

Sunday, January 14th began the first day of the new 48/96 schedule for Garner Fire-Rescue. This marks the beginning of a six month trial period in which the schedule will be monitored and a permanent decision made based upon the evaluation results.

My department has been on the 48/96 for several years now. We LOVE it. It maximizes time off while minimizing commutes and time needed to recover from a busy shift. The only downfall is the need to have an administration that understands that we're indeed there for 48 hours so a strict wakeup on day 2 is not enforced if we were up all night, etc.
