What happens with the helmet shield when a member is (temporary) on duty at an other firehouse or maybe the same house but eg. on the engine in stead of the truck?

Must the member use the actual shield ?

The member will use a spare company # insert that is on what can best be described as a large rubber band. This goes over the member's permanent company insert and is held around the helmet by the band. After the tour of duty it is returned to the company office.

Thanks,

That also explains the black bands on helmets I saw on several photo's :)

Peter, Many firefighters us these rubber straps to secure flashlights or wooden wedges used to secure doors in the open position, you will see some with large nails as well.

Petry, Majority of the time a Firefighter detailed to a different house or across the floor wont wear the temporary front piece, and will just keep their company front piece visible. But the officers in a different company will always usually use one.
