About thirty years ago, the building directly behind this building that got hit- on the Milam Street side- was a commercial plumbing outfit. One evening after dark the place was being burglarized. The thieves had loaded up a box truck in the yard. On the way out in a hurry, they took out the gas meter causing a fire that went to a second alarm. Then, as now, Engine and Ladder 7 coming from Elgin and Austin Streets were first due.
You can tell that hijacker the cops dragged out of that burning truck didn't have a gun.....he's still alive.
