Randolph Mantooth who played firefighter paramedic Johnny Gage on the TV series Emergency passed away today at age 80. He and the show were an inspiration to many of us to pursue this great calling of ours. I had the pleasure of meeting Randolph several years ago at a training conference. Nice guy. Rest easy Johnny. Ya dun good.

Randolph "Randy" Mantooth, the beloved actor who famously portrayed firefighter-paramedic Johnny Gage on the hit 1970s television series Emergency!, passed away on July 9, 2026, at the age of 80. He died peacefully at a hospice care facility in Ventura, California, following a long illness.

His groundbreaking performance introduced millions of viewers to the emerging profession of paramedicine and inspired generations of young people to enter the fire service and emergency medical fields.

Long after the show concluded in 1979, Mantooth remained a devoted advocate and spokesperson for the International Association of Firefighters (IAFF) and the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC)
