FDNY EMS now has merit based promotional exams. Imagine that, a merit based system to reward job related knowledge. I wonder when the FDNY FIRE side of the department will revert back to merit based testing to enter the FDNY.

The last EMS Captains exam was back around 1991. I was on the list but, the exam and list were thrown out because a Division Chief who had to take that exam in order to be a civil service Captain failed that exam which meant for him Division Chief right now and Lieutenant tomorrow. After that there never again was a Captain exam for EMS. Captain, Deputy Chief, Division Chief and on up were based on interview and "merit." Tell you the truth, I'm glad I never got the two bars. In EMS it was 100% more b.s. and for about forty dollars more a check.
