On arrival, Firemen found heavy fire showing through a portion of the roof on one story brick, block-long American Bridge steel plant on St. Paul Street. As the members of Engine 4 were moving their line in through a center door, the water hit the red-hot beams holding the roof up and the entire roof crashed down on top of them. The four men were crushed to death instantly under the falling roof.
