BFD to try new 24 hour shift schedule for one year.  Members work 24 hours shifts instead of day and night tours.  Members will work a 24-hour shift, and get the following 48 hours off. They will then work another 24-hour shift, and then get 96 hours off.  Member get more time off between shifts. Department wants to improve sick day and swapping policies.

I know many departments in Connecticut have gone to a 24 hour shift. Most guys like it.

Most departments work a 24 hour shift with three days off. The members have the option of taking a day shift off, a night shift off, or the entire 24 hours off.

When it comes to filling any overtime even a 24 hour job is split up. One guy gets hired for days and one guy gets hired for the night shift.

Most places do report money saved due to less sick time used. The old schedule was 3 days, 3 off, 3 nights, 3 off. A good case of the flu could knock somebody out for three days. And they certainly aren't able to go in and fight a fire.
