New FDNY Ladder 167

Body: Extruded Aluminum. Did they change the specs for the body from steel to aluminum? Or is it a mistake?

I noticed that too. I'd be surprised if they did. Obviously aluminum is corrosion resistant like stainless steel but it's also much less resilient to fatigue fractures than stainless steel is. I hope somebody knows for sure and can fill us in.

On the "New Deliveries" page L.36 & L.167 are listed as having aluminum bodies. All of the previous deliveries are stainless steel.

The reference to aluminum, above, is incorrect. The planned 15 new rearmounts, none of which are yet in service, will have 3CR12 stainless steel split cabs and bodies. No aluminum, extruded or otherwise, is part of the delivery.

l see they switched to aluminum wheels. lt seems they were switching to aluminum wheels on the 2010 towers too. And the rear door windows look like the KME now.
Who determines what type warning lights on cab roofs? they look like the older ones did.

The determination as to what type of lighting as well as almost everything else on the trucks is made by a team that includes both chiefs as well as firefighters and other line officers. Towards aluminum wheels was made both as a weight reduction and is a maintenance/safety issue since steel wheels notoriously rust and sometimes that can lead to failure. They went to the LED lighting to reduce the load on the electrical systems since there is so much electronic stuff on the rigs these days.

Thanks. l guess l'm trying to comprehend why they changed the lights on these ladders from the latest style on Seagraves & KMEs etc.  ... Will the next Seagraves & KMEs etc have these ?

It's been 8 months since this photo was on the new deliveries page on the Ferrara website and this truck hasn't been put into service yet.  Is this normal?
