  • All of you showed up months ago at the Fire Academy and didn’t know what to expect. You’ve come so far in that time and learned so much. You’ve been trained to fight fires and to respond to all manner of emergencies. You stand today, prepared to protect your fellow New Yorkers and honor the oath you swore when you began your training at the Academy. The oath was the beginning of a road to noble and brave work. It was the start of a career that many people dream of, but few can do. As you begin your careers, remember the work you do makes a difference in the lives of your neighbors. Respect your responsibility. Nurture your skills. Strive to continue learning. Learn from successes and failures. You will wake up in the blink of an eye and this day will long be in your rearview, and your career will have flown by when that day comes, you will look back on this moment, and realize it was the beginning of a great and rewarding career, that is as challenging as it is fun,” said Fire Commissioner Laura Kavanagh at today’s graduation for 288 #FDNY Probationary Firefighters.

Chief of Department John Hodgens said, “You should all be incredibly proud of everything you’ve done to arrive at this moment. This work is never easy – in fact, it is not supposed to be. But it is incredibly rewarding, and I know you will soon find exactly how rewarding.”
