Has anyone heard which companies will be going one man short on the new staffing charts?

49 engine companies most of which are in single engine firehouses. http://www.nyc.gov/html/fdny/html/pr/2009/120109_8009.shtml

So who are the 11 companies who "are always staffed with five firefighters, regardless of the medical leave numbers"?

11 engine companies have 5 man manning that is all. Rescues and Squads are separate. E 5, 65, 69, 42, 92, 158, 324,not sure of rest which are in brooklyn and 1 more in queens. Staffing is now 1651 per tour, and if fires and medical leaves happen these units will lose the 5th man to bring those affected by medical leave up to manning, then its truck companies losing a man and so on.

This is so nuts its infuriating! Firefighting is inherently dangerous, to tie staffing levels to medical leave is idiotic. Considering the fact someone is entering an environment wrought with high heat, collapses, toxic smoke, and possible haz materials, would City Hall be more comfortable with firefighters potentially lying about their health and civilians dying because firefighters are showing up to work not healthy enough to do their job? Only bean counters would come up with this.

Why does everything coming out of City Hall have to do with response times, response times, response times, that?s like a starters gun going off at a race. Big deal, the race isn?t over it just began.

And New York City has a greater number of skyscrapers and multiple dwellings, making a 5th man vital, than big cities like Chicago, Boston, Washington, or Los Angeles for that matter where public housing consists of 1 and 2 story PDs not fire-resistant high-rise MDs, like what?s alluded to in that piece of baloney press release that went out Tuesday. This is like saying L66 can respond to City Island without affecting peoples lives then luckily L53 isn't closed yet 1/6/09 and its hummina, hummina, hummina. How did people fall for this mayor, its amazaing they voted for the King. Guess that?s what a billionaire can buy these days.

L61 not L66

I apologize for the mistake. 3 and 4 firefighters on an Engine, I dread the day. How many dead firefighters and civilians will it take before we see someone smirk again and miracle ? the policy?s reversed.

The other 4 are  the haz-mat tech companies.

According to FDNY an operational reference, the following engine companies have to start each tour with 5 FFs, regardless of sickness absence, Engines 5, 8, 65, and 69. Does this mean these engines just start the tour with 5, then send 1 out to cover at another house, therebye dropping to 4, or do they stay at 5 FF,s for the dduration of the tour??

They start tour with 5 men, if a medical leave or any other type leave occurs during tour then the 11 companies that have 5 will detail that member to fill vacancy. If nothing happens during a tour then these companies have 5 men for whole tour.Latley the job has been surplus so many additional engines have had 5 men for tour, meaning normal amount is 1651 and lately it has been in low 1700's.
