Fire near Downtown Newport News sends smoke billowing into the sky

NNFD: Former church catches fire on Orcutt Avenue

Newport News is responding to a fire on the corner of Orcutt Avenue and 44th Street on April 14, Newport News Fire Department said.

From the NNFD Facebook page:
"Today, the NNFD was dispatched to the 4000 block of Orcutt Ave for a commercial structure fire. On arrival the crews had heavy fire visible from multiple sides of the building. This incident was upgraded to a 2nd alarm fire. Two residential homes did receive heat damage, one of those homes is now condemned. No injuries have been reported. A fire investigation is currently in progress.
Thank you to all the surrounding jurisdictions that backfilled our stations to keep our citizens safe!"
