The FDNY press release on "343" stated the following:

"The FDNY Marine Fleet consists of more than 30 vessels responsible for over 450 miles of coastline and harbors and has protected New York City residents for 134 years."

I am having trouble with 30 vessels.  Let's see if we can solve the mystery before we chalk it up to an error, (like saying the FireFighter is 50 years old when it is 71).

Marine 1   John D. McKeon
              Marine 1 Alpha

Marine 3    Summer Boat  27' Boston Whaler

Marine 4    Summer Boat  25' Privateer

Marine 6   Kevin Kane
             Governor Alfred E. Smith
             Marine 6A

Marine 8  Summer Boat 27' Boston Whaler

Marine 9   FireFighter

Two MARC boats, one at E154 and one at E164

Small Boats 1 at SOC, 1 with TAC 1 and 1 with TAC2

Spare Boats:  19' Boston Whalers (2)  Fort Schuyler and Scuba
25' Boston Whalers  (2)  at BNY and M4
                    25' Privateer (1)

Total listed above 19 vessels

Each Rescue has a "boat"

How many more are there?

Marine Operations has three full-sized boats (Fire Fighter, John D. McKean, Governor Alfred E. Smith). one 52-foot boat (Kevin C. Kane), and 11 small boats.  Included in the latter are Marine 1 Alpha, three summer boats, one SCUBA training, one safety, three spare, and two MARC boats.  Note that the last two are maintained by Mar Ops, but managed by Staten Island Borough Command.  SOC Rescue (5), Tactical Support Unit (2), and Technical Services water rescue equipment cache inflatables (4) are not normally included in the total vessel count.  Also note there is no Marine 6 Alpha;  that designation was used recently for a spare boat for a one-time drill.
