I have been doing some work for a project on HAZMAT in the USA, and came across the DEP Hazmat Rig, and the Transit Hazmat rig, if its ok and anyone knows i have a few questions on these.

Are the units manned 24/7 by a dedicated HAZMAT crew, who train and respond to calls citywide as per HAZMAT 1 would, but obviously within their own remit.

Are they based at 'firehouse' style facilities or just parked out in a parking lot, (security of the rig and equipment).

Are their any other NYC agencies that rub=na  dedicated fully equiped hazmat rig and team??

many thanks in advance.

the transit hazmat rig is called when needed and its kept in  trainyard in queens. I dont know if transit hazmat was ever used and i dont know much more about it.

The last time I saw the DEP rig, it was quartered in North Bklyn. in a fenced in area.

here is a video of the dep hazmat responding in the background http://www.youtube.com/embed/SE8xKgqEDJ0

from my research, and info i got, the best, and only dedicated, and on-call 24/hour unit, full off mad dedicated scientists, commited to their role in every way, and highly professional and capable, is in fact FDNY HAZMAT 1.

No other agency seems to have a dedicated, well structured and stable Hazmat unit than the fdny, otheres just seen to play at it.

Thanks for the info guys.

Yes, NYPD has a Haz-Mat Unit. It started as a "research" desk for field units to call, but I think that they do have a large ESU truck.
