Red Cross Notification

On a recent box the Division Chief asked the Dispatcher to notify the Red Cross about families that would have to be relocated due to a fire. The Dispatcher responded that the families would have to call the Red Cross themselves.

Does anyone know the current protocol for notifying the Red Cross and if FDNY has any involvement?  It would seem that someone should be acting as an ombudsman for people who can't go back in their home in the middle of the night.

Red Cross usually calls us on the all hands, and asks for the particulars. Height, size up, etc. If we know someone needs them and they call, we give them the building info and then tell them to get someone over there.

If someone needs them, we give the number over the air or via MDT to the IC. We don't have the particulars for the people in need, and it's easier for the chief to pass along the info since they are usually standing next to the displaced persons.

Strictly by the book, people displaced by fire have to call Red Cross for relocation. However, when we vacate a building, then it's our job to call.
