April 3, 1962 is a day in Connecticut that will be remembered as the Most Tragic Day in the Fire Service. On that day - FOUR Norwich, Ct Firefighters lost their lives when they responded to what was reported as a truck on fire. That truck, carrying hazardous chemicals exploded killing:

1) Captain William Sheridan
2) Firefighter Leonard Counihan
3) Firefighter Edward Romano
4) Firefighter Carl Burke

The two surviving members, Firefighter Thomas Demauro (since passed on) and Fire Lt Tom LaFreniere received serious injuries but eventually returned to work.

On this date, April 3rd, we remember those we lost.

It is also the day that we honor any firefighter in the department who might have went beyond or helped others in a significant way.

Here is a link that tells the story of that tragic day on April 3, 1962. It might take a few extra seconds before the article shows up.
