Rhode Island launches state fire academy

Looks like they are headed in a good direction, does anybody know how many states actually have a state fire Academy?  Obviously New York is a highly respected one I'm sure there are many others.

We have a relatively new Fire and Codes Academy that was constructed in a rural part of Middle Tennessee between Murfreesboro and Shelbyville. It is a self contained campus with classrooms, dorms, cafeteria, all the associated traing buildings and props. The fire station has an engine, truck, rescue and tanker in order to teach all firefighting evolutions.

Connecticut has a Fire Academy that is located near Bradley Airport outside of Hartford. I think it was opened in the 1990s.

Most cities that hire firefighters require them to attend a 16 week fulltime Monday-Friday Recruit Probie School there. A lot of the instructors are active or retired firefighters from some of the busiest cities in the state. During the week, M-F, the probies stay at night and go home on the weekends. They sometimes also have drills go on during the night time hours. Also, I've known of some members of the FDNY that have taught there as well.

I think there is an engine and ladder truck that is kept there and owned by the state used for that training.

It involves a strict regiment of physical exercise, classroom and hands on training, under a semi military form of discipline. I have seen the results of this training and it is one of the best. Very often, any individual who pays his own way and successfully completes that entire program will be given preference on being hired at some places.

If I remember correctly, Class # 57 was the last group to graduate.

There are a few depts. that still offer what is referred to as "in house training". New Haven being one of them, in which this city has their probies attend their own fire academy. But that is the exception. Even Hartford and Bridgeport sends their probies to the Ct Fire Academy.

The academy is also used for many other classes offered as well.
