Studying my 6th Operation Reference I think I understand the roles for Safety Battalion and Safety Coordinator.
The Safety Battalion is a Chief assigned to that job. Because of the long response time an additional Battalion Chief nearby is assigned as a Safety Coordinator.
The Safety Coordinator will be on scene first and starts with safety tasks, but will be relieved by the Safety Battalion when he arrives.

Q1 - Am I right ?
Q2 - Is there still one SB citywide ?
Q3 - Will the additional BC (Safety Coordinator) replace SB in future ? (which I can imagine)

There is still 1 Safety Batt. There was a 2nd one housed @ 332 & 175 and disbanded Sept. 1998

Petey -- You are correct concerning the functions of the Safety Coordinator (now known as the Safety Officer) and the Safety Battalion.  All battalion chiefs assigned to 49 firefighting battalions are qualified to carry out the Safety Officer role.  Note that an acting battalion chief is not assigned as the Safety Officer.

As mentioned above, there is only one Safety Battalion.  With the current emphasis on firefighter safety, there is no thought of doing away with the Safety Battalion.

OK thanks,

I thought when a lot of ( or all ) Battalion Chiefs are trained as Safety Officer they could act as Safety Battalion.
I guess this is a very specialised job, to much for a Batt.Chief as extra task.
