With all the ice taking out power in south central Virginia and northern N. C. many trees and wires are down. People were heating with portable kerosene heaters and at about 2130 hours on Feb. 15th a fire started in a residence on Back Hampden Sydney Road in Prince Edward County, Va. This happened during a heavy rain storm with a muddy dirt road over 800 feet off the paved road. Four inch supply hose was laid out, but 3 inch hose had to be used for the last several hundred feet in order for water tenders to fill a portable pond where an engine sent water to the scene. The home was fully involved as fire companies from Hampden - Sydney FD, Prospect FD, Farmville FD, Darlington Heights FD and Meherrin FD fought the fire.
