take a mark means make an entry in the house journal, in other words take credit for the run but stay in service

A bit of history on this i picked up from a member of R2 while i was visiting, in the war years, officers of companies would have a peice of paper or pad and they would mark down the number of runs the. Omapny had as best he could, some marked just that 'a mark' when companies were in competion with each other over who was the busiest, others would mark a run and add a bit of detail if time permited to assist in any paperwork back at the house after a busy tour.
When comapnies were not needed at the box or were delayed due to taking up from the previous box due to a shortage of companies, and missed out on any work needed at the new box, as 103 explained the dispatcher would transmit take a mark and remain in service.
Another statement if numerous fires were going, a comapny would be on one run, and if the dispatchers were juggling companies around, they may transmit take a mark for your current run and re direct to XXXX, this one as not used as often and was informed it was used in some boroughs more than others.
