December 3rd is the anniversary of the darkest day in the history of the Worcester Fire Department.
On that day 6 members paid the ultimate price. Fire building was a vacant, 6 story former cold storage warehouse. At 6:13 a still alarm was dispatched, first due units reported heavy smoke showing. At 6:17 a second alarm was transmitted. About this time information was received that there might be homeless people inside. R-1 was ordered to search for the 2 people. At 6:40 the third alarm was transmitted. 6:55 two members of R-1 reported they were lost in a maze of corridors with a heavy smoke condition. This was the last time R-1 transmitted. A search team with 2 members each from E-3 and L-2 went in to find their brothers. They encounted the same conditions that had befallen the members of R-1. At 7:15 the search team said they were lost and running out of air. Alert tones were sounded, this was the last radio messages from E-3/L-2. 6 brave men died trying to make a rescue that was never going to happen, the 2 individuals left the building after knocking over a candle and starting the fire. Info came from the wikipedia site, search for Worcester Cold Storage Fire site for a broader description. RIP our Brothers. :'( :'( :( :( :'( :'(
