My Dad had a place up there, 90 acres or so, and the town was about 2 blocks long. That was back in the mid 60's to mid 70's. A lot of farm land and neighbors were pretty far apart. The problem back then was travelling up there was the traffic. From Queens to there was about 150 miles and sometimes take up to 4 hours. A lot of backroads and hilly terrain to get there after the ride on Rte. 80. Hydrants would be far and few between in the outskirts of town so the need for the big water tank is evident.
