Zack, as I understand it, that was used for special eventslike when the president would visit NYC etc. Actually, I believe there were two of these such units.

i thought that those were numbered 001 (presidentail) and 002 (everyone else). but why would they use type 3s as opposed to type 1s for stuff like that?

They are called DPU's(Dignitary Protection Units). I forget what the number on the rigs actually are. They are used for the president and vice president, primarily. They are larger to accomodate more equipment, IIRC. I don't know much else about them.

There were four Ford Type 3 ambulances purchased in 1997 (from four different ambulance manufacturers) as an experiment.  They were not well liked, and were quickly removed from regular service (actually, I don't know if they were ever even in regular service).  Two were used as RAC units, while the other two were used as the DPU's.  I will try to look up registration #'s for you later today.

I'm not certain, but I believe one is used as #613 Haz tac. I'll check the registration on it and post pictures of it when I get home.

FDNY changes the registration number of ambulances it converts to non-ambulance functions - so all of the "FA" designations were changed to "FM".

thanks for the help everyone i was going to list it as a DPU but the numbers threw me off because i didnt know they could change them. now another question why did FDNY get these and put these in regular service in the first place?
