Voluntary Units

# of strictly volunteer organizations: http://www.n2nov.net/nycvolamb.html
Not entirely sure about hospital organizations.

EMS 80 series units are temporary units, for example, the summer-only units deployed in 2008, or those activated for a short-term special event.  They are not units of the 29 currently recognized volunteer ambulance corps (series 90) operating in the city.  However, they may be units from the several "voluntary" hospitals, which voluntarily operate ambulances as part of the FDNY-managed municipal system.

FDNY use to use numbers like 08M, 07M when they would run an extra unit in that area.  For what ever reason they changed the style.  There is also a list of FDNY units that use the same system, this would be when extra personal are working but all the normal units are full.
