Incident Location: 1 Stanford Court

On the evening of Saturday, April 6th, 2024, the Wantagh Fire Department was alerted for a report of a house on fire just before 2000 hours. The initial reported location was in the vicinity of Jerusalem Ave & Holiday Park Drive. As units began responding, Dispatcher Francis Nicpon received multiple calls and the tentative address of 3125 Dragon Lane.

As calls kept coming in, PD reported the fire to be at 1 Stanford Ct; this was relayed by Safety Officer Ex-Chief Bruce Sparke [6920]. PD reported a working fire with an occupant trapped within, resulting in Chief Leonard Mathewson [6900] starting out our mutual aid companies. Chief Mathewson arrived on scene and transmitted a “Signal 10” (working fire) and confirming the preliminary report of one occupant trapped within.

Engine 2 [692], led by Captain Mike Fratello, was the first unit on scene and the first due engine. Engine 2 layed into a hydrant (securing their own water supply) and had an attack line stretched to the door and charged very shortly after arriving. Tower Ladder 1 [6911], led by Captain Andrew Carpentier, was the first due truck and arrived immediately after Engine 2. First due companies made an aggressive interior attack, encountering severe hoarding conditions within, a heavy fire load on the interior and exterior (deck with multiple propane tanks involved), causing high heat with very little visibility, and rapidly deteriorating conditions. Members pushed forward to knock down the fire while the truck company continued their search.

This fire was challenging due to the multiple factors from fire load, heat, collyers mansion conditions, and urgency to push forward to continue searching for the occupant. The occupant was located and removed from the dwelling by North Bellmore TL658, and brought to NCPD EAB medics who began life saving procedures and transported the occupant to the hospital.
